Do airline carry-on limits include wheels and handles?
Yes. American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Air Canada, Air France and KLM all state on their own pages that the limit includes wheels and handles. The main exception found is Wizz Air, which measures without them but caps wheels at 5 cm. Measure the bag the way the sizer will: standing, handle retracted, from the floor to the top.
Why does a 22 inch carry-on fail in Europe?
Because 22 inches is 55.9 cm and the common European limit is 55 cm. Lufthansa, SWISS and Turkish publish 55 x 40 x 23 cm, so a bag that exactly meets the US 22 x 14 x 9 standard is almost a centimetre too long there. A 21 inch bag at about 53 cm clears both.
Should I trust the size printed on the box?
Only when it says the figure includes wheels and handles. Many listings quote the body alone, which can be one to two inches shorter than the bag you will actually push into a sizer. This site marks every bag dimension as either wheels included or as listed, and only the first kind is used for fit verdicts.
What is the most common carry-on size limit?
22 x 14 x 9 inches is the most common published limit among US airlines on this site: American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Hawaiian, Breeze and WestJet all publish it or its metric equivalent. Southwest and Frontier allow a larger 24 x 16 x 10 inches, and Spirit 22 x 18 x 10.
